So I bought this a little while ago and have be trying the products in preparation for this review. Today we're looking at Benefit's "Primping with the Stars, All-time Greatest Fake-Its Kit" ...... Well what is it exactly? It's a sample box with six of Benefit's most famous cult products. All in an adorable little travel size. The kit includes: Stay Don't Stray Stay-Put Primer for Concealers and Eyeshadows, Some Kind-A-Gorgeous Foundation in Medium, Benetint Rose-Tinted Lip & Cheek Stain, The Porefessional Pro Balm, Girl Meets Pearl Liquid Pearl for Face, and They're Real! Beyond Mascara in Black.
The packaging is all really cute, but there is nothing terribly special about it. The box looks sort of like a book, and then when you open it up everything is neatly stored. I do however appreciate that they made the inside tray removable incase you wanted to use the box for something else in the future. The travel sizes are admittedly tiny, which I don't mind considering they'll be perfect for on-the-go makeup. I also think this makes for the perfect introduction to the brand. If you've never tried any of their products and you're nervous about putting out $30+ for one thing, this gives you 6 products to try, and hopefully you'll find a few products worth buying in regular sizes. Overall a pretty good buy for $32. I found that 4 out of the 6, I would repurchase, and 2 that were just complete misses. I'll go over the duds first, get them outta the way and then go over the items I did like.
I found this product to just be a complete waste. It's a cream foundation that is meant to dry as a powder. It had good intentions but was a total disaster. The cream texture is very slippery and slimy feeling and then as soon as it dries it becomes this ashy, flakey horrible texture. Just totally gross. Not to mention it doesn't cover anything. It also would have been nice if you could choose the shade of foundation because it only comes in medium, not that it matters because even in my shade I wouldn't use this product.
This product is meant to be a highlighter or a shimmer blush, the included "tips and tricks" information suggested you layer this product with the BeneTint cheek stain. Which admittedly I liked more than the product on it's own. As is this product wasn't horrible, but it certainly wasn't anything to write home about. I didn't find that added a pearly highlight, it's more of a sweaty glisten look, which is cute if you're leaving the gym, but not a look I'd intentionally go for. I also struggled with how to apply this. I used several different foundation bases: MUFE, Stila, BH Cosmetics, Nyx, and Bareminerals, and everything I used was somehow removed when I applied the Liquid Pearl. I also tried different application techniques, my fingers, sponge, and brushes. I found the sponge worked the best but none were really ideal. When I layered this with the BeneTint cheek stain, the pink stain underneath shone through the pearly glisten and made a pretty cheek colour, but I simply wouldn't buy this product just for that. There are so many great highlighters out there, and this just isn't one of them.
The product surprised me. I'm not one for face-primers because I think it's just a bunch of snake oil, but if you're someone who can't live without a pore-minimizer then I think this is your product. It has a nice texture, and a subtle tint. A little goes a long way and it applies very easily. Giveing the over all effect of a smoother foundation. The results aren't drastic but it's nice. It's not a must-buy for me, however it definitely delivers.
This was another surprising product, it was extra tiny and I just didn't expect much. But hey turns out great things do come in small packages. This is a great little primer for eyeshadow, has a really nice light neutral base colour and dries really fast and isn't super tacky. But it gets better! I absolutely loved it as a concealer primer. I used it over a couple little blemishes and I almost could have just left them covered like that. I just added a touch of my favourite concealer (amazing concealer) and I only had to use half of my regular amount. And good by blemishes, just like that! I was also super impressed that it held my concealer on a lot longer than my concealer on it own. Because this tiny but mighty product will be a serious money saver for my concealer it's a definite repurchase.
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this product, I usually use a powder blush, and I'm not very familiar with stains. Thankfully there were instructions included on how to best apply this product, and it was way easier than I thought. Just three little drops on your cheek and blend with your finger tips. I also anticipated it being messy, and streaky but incountered neither of those things. I really like the colour and the fact that you don't feel this product. It's like adding nothing but getting this great colour. It is a super natural looking flush and I will be using it for my no-makeup makeup looks from now on. It is also a lovely natural pouty lip colour. It is especially good if you want a colour on your lips and you're worried about transfers - because it's a stain there really is no rub-off. I also didn't find the product hard to remove with a mild cleaners. I really love the duality, ease and naturalness of this product, definite must have Benefit product that's worth the hype.
This was definitely my favourite product of the bunch and an absolute must have for any beauty bag. The formula is a really black mascara, and it does an amazing job at lengthening your lashes, and creating a a thicker appearance without being clumpy or extra fake looking. This mascara is not for those looking for natural lashes, it gives you the "falsey" look without the racoon look. I really love the wand though and it has to be my favourite part.
The tip of the wand has this spiky bit so if you want you can hold the wand perfectly vertical and use it to separate your lashes for a more fan-like effect, and to remove any clumsy clumps. It's just a great formula and a great wand design. I absolutely love it and will without a doubt be repurchasing this in a regular size.
For $32 I would give this kit a buy because I learned some new things, and it's given me the opportunity to try some products that I wouldn't have shelled out the cash for without trying first. It would also make a great gift for a makeup loving teen who is just learning. Overall this kit is a great introduction to Benefit, and a great kit to try some products you wouldn't normally try. So take a step out of your comfort zone and try something new with your makeup.
